Welcome to the LoPiverse web site. So what is the LoPiverse? Well, it's
really just a convenient short-hand definition for the series of fanfic and
cross-over fanfic e-books, based upon J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, by
the author A.J. Hall. Namely, two full length novels,
Lust Over Pendle and Dissipation
and Despair and a series of shorter stories, Mark
of the Beast, Not a Whisper, Queer as Scent, The
Kindly Ones, Time Shall Not
Mend, Ships that Pass and
the new short story, The Perilous
Point. (The
word 'LoPiverse' itself, comes from the abbreviation of the title of the first
novel, Lust Over Pendle, or LoP for short.)
The LoPiverse is based upon the following premises which cannot be found
within the Harry Potter canon (although they are believed to be not inconsistent
with canon as that is known up to the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix, and any apparent inconsistencies are explained below);
-
The LoPiverse story arc is a futurefic, i.e. it takes place after the current
timeline set out in the books, and, for the most part after the intended
conclusion of the Harry Potter series, so far as that is known to date.
-
The war against Voldemort was in its latter stages an organised military and
strategic conflict, requiring tactical organisation, military discipline and
various alliances between interest groups, although it was probably more of a
guerrilla conflict than one involving pitched battles. Although its climax was a
personal confrontation between Harry and Voldemort, it took a very serious
concerted effort involving most of the wizarding world to place the principals
in a position where that confrontation could take place.
-
During the war the Ministry of Magic assumed a large raft of emergency powers,
many of which it has refused to relinquish up to seven years after the
conclusion of the conflict.
-
Narcissa, Draco's mother, was the daughter of Patrice deVries, formerly Patrick
Device, who married (possibly bigamously) a Miss Black, Sirius Black's aunt. On
the death of Patrice deVries when Narcissa was aged about 8 his wife, thoroughly
disgusted by his long string of infidelities with Muggle aristocrats and
financial chicanery, reverted to her maiden name, under which name she entered
her three daughters Bellatrix, Andromeda and Narcissa at Hogwarts. When,
following her own husband's death, Narcissa made a tactical decision to change
her name she reverted to the deVries version which appears on her birth
certificate, on the basis that it was better to be associated with an acquitted
(if disreputable) defendant than a choice of two convicted criminals.
-
Malfoy Manor is located in the Wiltshire village of Malfoy Intrinsica.
-
The Longbottom residence is located in Roughlee, Pendle, Lancashire.
-
The Longbottom fortune is considerably larger than the Malfoy one (which has
been much depleted by treachery, bribery and roof repairs) though considerably
smaller than the Device fortune, all or most of which has devolved upon Narcissa
deVries. Both the Longbottom (formerly Chattox) and Device fortunes were derived
from industry.
-
Narcissa Black and Lily Evans were close friends when at Hogwarts. Owing to an
incident occurring in their final year, Narcissa detested James Potter until his
death.
-
Until the final severance between Wizard and Muggle worlds owing to the Statute
of Secrecy 1692 there was considerable interchange between the two, albeit in a
fairly strained form. As a result the Malfoys (for example) were both a
pureblood wizard family and one whose original landholding of a hunting lodge
and demesne in Wiltshire was a direct gift from William Rufus, for services
rendered. In practical terms the relationship between worlds is less completely
severed even today than the Ministry would like it to be, especially in "soft"
places where there has always been a good deal of magical activity. Both Pendle
and the Wiltshire/Dorset border have historically been "soft" places. The
traditional attitude of Muggles living in such places is "don't ask, don't tell"
in respect of magical activities they witness or suspect.

People can and do change very dramatically during their late teen years,
especially if the kick applied to the seat of their pants is sufficiently
forceful.
I am indebted to Alec for the
marvellous map and floor plans and to Russ,
over at shoes for industry, who
designed the book covers, compiled the e-books and has lovingly hand built all these beautiful
web sites.
Last, but not least, to all of you who have written and said how much they
have enjoyed the LoPiverse e-books, a very big thank you, it really does
make it all worth while...
