Charis plays a dangerous game and realises too late that the stakes are far higher than she imagined. Now only her wits, her nerve and her gambler's instincts stand between her and the Pretender's plans for the three kingdoms. And she is very far into enemy territory, and feels so very, very alone.

After offending his Bishop, the Rev. Peter Blakeney had feared he would be stuck for the rest of his career in rough inner city curacies. Even though his letter of appointment bore an anonymous scrawl "Best of British luck", the surprise offer of the incumbency of St Sebastian's Church, Malfoy Intrinsica, Wiltshire seemed like the promise of a rural idyll. And though the foot and mouth epidemic was in full swing, there were sinister carvings behind the choir stalls and all the locals changed the subject immediately if he even mentioned the Manor up the hill (let alone its reclusive Lord) he felt he was settling in well. Until one night there came a tap at his study window, and he found himself caught between two worlds, and about to find out exactly why St Sebastian is the patron saint of archers, enemies of religion, gardeners, murrains of cattle, plagues and police. It is a cosy English village whodunit in the classic tradition, give or take an Unforgivable curse or so.

Green Grow the Rushes, O urn:shoesforindustry:53 2013-06-02T09:09:14Z A.J. Hall http://ajhall.shoesforindustry.net

This Sherlock novella is set between Series 1 & 2 of BBC Sherlock and is an homage to Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story A Case of Identity.

"The people asserting loudest that a marriage must be about to happen are the ones who’d be personally devastated if it did."

John and Sarah travel to North Yorkshire to attend Sarah’s nephew’s christening, and discover Sarah’s family seem to think this family celebration is only the precursor to another one. It’s not only Sarah’s family who may be harbouring strange ideas; Sherlock has gone incommunicado in Oxford, a city with which he has had a love/hate relationship since he was sent down from the University in his second year.

This novella is a slightly edited version of one which was originally published 2012-05-25 in The Science of Deduction, a Sherlock fanzine published by Golden Pyramids Press edited by Jeanne R. Gold and Myfieldnotes. This version appears by agreement with them. Many thanks to Golden Pyramids and its editors for all their hard work on the original fanzine; it’s a beautiful production in which I was honoured to be included.

Lilies at the Funeral is a cross-over between the worlds of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple and of Mary Renault's Return to Night, with occasional guest appearances by characters from other books. It is set immediately after the conclusion of Return to Night.

The announcement of Dr Hilary Mansell's engagement to Julian Fleming, the much younger owner of Larch Hill, comes as a shock to her nephew Sam, who knew Julian at Oxford. But Julian's mother Elaine is not merely shocked, but overtly hostile. Given the intense, febrile relationship between mother and son, something has to snap.

Out of Battle's main protagonist is Miss Haliburton who is a character in Mary Renault's The Charioteer. There are no spoilers for that or any other work of Mary Renault's unless revealing that two people are fond of dogs is a spoiler. This story is set in Alexandria throughout, to preserve the unity of place, and there isn't much action anyway. Two out of three ain't that bad, Aristotle, in my opinion.

If you haven't read Mary Renault's The Charioteer or The Persian Boy, then you really should.

The pounding guns of El-Alamein shake the streets of Alexandria.  Miss Haliburton, meanwhile, is fighting her own battle, against the bureaucrats who refuse to let her take her healing skills to the front line.  In this timeless city, an unexpected casualty is brought to her door for treatment.  Worlds are about to collide.

From the shore at Aulis to the palace in Gaaldine, to be a princess is to be a sacrifice.

In a remote country residence Master Ripley, a physician famed for his knowledge of frenzy and melancholia, tends a distraught woman broken by the ruthless dynastic politics of her House. The unexpected arrival of her kinsman the Crown Prince is a catalyst which forces Ridley to recognise the brooding evil at the root of his patient’s malady, a curse which has poisoned the lives of four generations and which sits so close to the Crown that treason itself ceases to be a relevant consideration.

Meanwhile, death, fire and destruction creep inland from the sea, and the wind is changing...

Rumpole and the Constricted Pupil urn:shoesforindustry:63 2015-05-07T10:28:24Z A.J. Hall http://ajhall.shoesforindustry.net

"Rumpole and the Constricted Pupil" was originally written for the 2015 RenaultX Exchange Challenge.

It is a cross-over between the worlds of Rumpole of the Bailey, the Marlows books by Antonia Forest and The Charioteer by Mary Renault.

When Horace Rumpole first represented Alec Deacon, the latter was a newly minted registrar, up on charges arising out of a misunderstanding in the gentlemen's conveniences at Gloucester Green bus station, Oxford. Now he's Sir Alec Deacon F.R.C.S. and needs Rumpole's help again, this time on a charge of burglary ("No, Rumpole, that's not a spelling mistake in the charge sheet.")
Rumpole's only hope of keeping his client out of gaol depends on finding a Will which may have been lost, stolen, impounded by the Samarkand branch of the KGB -- or simply never written in the first place. Fortunately, Patrick Merrick, his summer pupil, knows a girl who may be able to shed some light on the matter.

The Road Goes Ever On and On urn:shoesforindustry:71 2016-03-02T12:06:55Z A.J. Hall http://ajhall.shoesforindustry.net

'The Road Goes Ever On and On' is a fic based upon Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry. It is canon-compliant up to the end of the Fionavar Tapestry but diverges from Kay's later novel involving some of these characters, Ysabel.

The old cops always tell the cadets, 'There's always going to be one or two cases that strike harder than the others, for whatever reason - what place you're in when they crop up, what the outcome is, something about the people involved. Watch those. If you aren't careful, they're the ones that will take over your life.'

For forty years, Toronto cop Sean has been obsessed with the Jennifer Lowell case. She and two friends vanished on a trip to Europe in the late 1970s, when five friends flew out to England on less than two days notice and only two returned. Sean's suspicion has always rested on Dave Martyniuk, one of the two returnees. But he has never had enough evidence to make a charge stick, and each year that passes has increased Maryniuk's power and influence, so he is now virtually untouchable.

Three months into Sean's retirement, chance brings a young student to his home, who he realises holds the key to getting inside Martyniuk's citadel at last.

The Torchbearers urn:shoesforindustry:74 2016-09-25T09:37:21Z A.J. Hall http://ajhall.shoesforindustry.net

The Torchbearers is a novella crossing the worlds of Mary Renault's North Face and The Charioteer with Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey stories.

September, 1946. An airman's body washed up on a beach brings Lord Peter and Harriet to Barlock, Somerset. To Lord Peter, the dead pilot represents unfinished business. He is the latest in a series of deaths linked to "X", a shadowy figure who uses his connections within Bridstow's close-knit homosexual community to extort military intelligence from vulnerable men in high-level roles. A chance encounter with an old college acquaintance hands Harriet a loose end which may have the power to unravel all X's intrigues.

For Lilliburlero.

Time Shall Not Mend urn:shoesforindustry:19 2012-04-17T08:29:03Z A.J. Hall http://ajhall.shoesforindustry.net

Time Shall Not Mend is one in a series of LoPiverse ebooks by the author A.J. Hall. You might like to refer to their chronology, suggested reading order & more detailed series information. It is a cross-over between the Harry Potterverse and the Vorkosigan novels of Lois McMaster Bujold.

A thousand years away and half across the galaxy a bereaved young woman stalks through a cocktail party thinking: "Anywhere but here". Meanwhile, back on Earth and in the dying days of the struggle against Voldemort a plague has been unleashed on the wizarding community. A potion to cure it exists - but a crucial ingredient is a plant which grows only on a remote mountain in Scotland. And that mountain has an almost impenetrable defence around it. Worlds are about to collide

This work was conceived as a birthday tribute to E.H. Smith, whose trilogy Marks and Scars, Without Enchantment, and No Great Magic first crossed the Vorkosiverse with the Potterverse, to stunning effect.

To Strive, To Seek urn:shoesforindustry:57 2014-07-02T11:20:06Z A.J. Hall http://ajhall.shoesforindustry.net

Originally written for the 2014 Renault Fic Exchange, as a gift for Lilliburlero. The prompt requested a crossover with the Marlows books by Antonia Forest, and a story dealing with issues of class. Bonus prompt requests included Laurie and Ralph after the events of The Charioteer, and how the boy Mervyn got on following Ralph's gift to him of the *East Africa Pilot*.

The action of the story takes place shortly before, during and immediately after the events of Falconer's Lure by Antonia Forest, and some eight years after the events of The Charioteer by Mary Renault.

The smallest thing can change a life. In Mervyn's case, it was the position of a bed in a surgical ward in war-time Bridstow and the chance gift of a copy of the East Africa Pilot.

Note this book now has new high resolution images for Kindle (mobi) and a high res version specifically for Apple iBooks (iBooks).
